The Quantum Numbers of General Chemistry

In our model of the atom, every electron has a distinct set of values for the four quantum numbers.

  1. n – Principle Quantum Number
  2. \ell – Azimuthal Quantum Number
  3. m_\ell – Magnetic Quantum Number
  4. m_s – Spin Quantum Number

We will show the quantum numbers for the six electrons of carbon.

n is 1, \: \ell is 0, \: m_\ell is 0, \: m_s is 1/2

 n is 1, \: \ell is 0, \: m_\ell is 0, \: m_s is 1/2

n is 2, \: \ell is 0, \: m_\ell is 0, \: m_s is +1/2

n is 2, \: \ell is 0, \: m_\ell is 0, \: m_s is -1/2

n is 2, \: \ell is 1, \: m_\ell is -1, \: m_s is +1/2

n is 2, \: \ell is 1, \: m_\ell is 0, \: m_s is +1/2
