$4^{3}=4*4*4=64$

Exponentiation is the multiplication of like factors.

$x^{m}x^{n}=x^{m+n}$

$\dfrac{x^m}{x^n}=x^{m-n}$

For the example at the top, 4 is the base and 3 is the exponent.

Appendix A

The following three identities are sibetimes called the Laws of Exponents:

$a^m a^n = a^{m+n}$

$(a^m)^n=a^{mn}$

$a^{-n}= \dfrac{1}{a^n}$
