We might define the integers as what you get if you start at zero and then count forever in both directions (higher and lower).
We might define Integers as being a set that comes from adding three sets together:
- Zero (0)
- The counting numbers: 1, 2, 3, …
- The negatives of the counting numbers: -1, -2, -3, …
