Sound

Sound has a finite speed. A child may be told to count seconds after seeing a lighting strike, and for every five seconds, that is a mile of separation between the lighting strike location and the child.

The speed of sound at sea level is about 761 mph. Let’s see how how far something moving at that speed travels in five seconds:

5.00 s * \dfrac {1 min} {60 s} * \dfrac {1 hr} {60 min} * \dfrac {761 mi} {hr} = 1.06 mi

If a sound is moving, the pitch you hear can change. This is the Doppler Effect.
